Buyer's Guide: Pillow Buying Guide

Pillows are an essential part of your best night's sleep. You can have the perfect mattress for your body but if your pillow does not support your head and neck properly, still, you may find yourself tossing and turning the night away. This guide will help you choose a pillow suitable for your needs; however, please keep in mind it is highly recommended that before you buy a pillow, you go to a store where you can test it out.

If you lie on your back to sleep, you will need a pillow that supports the natural curvature of your spine. This means that your pillow should support your neck, rather than prop you up. Typically, a medium firm, medium thickness pillow is the best feel for this position. It's also a great idea to put a firm, medium thickness pillow under your knees. With the pillow behind your knees it almost creates a feeling of zero gravity. This position is good for alleviating mild back pain. The following pillows are suitable for back sleepers: Pacific Coast Feather: Won't Go Flat Pillow, Pacific Coast Feather: SensaCool Pillow, Natura Latex Pillow

If you sleep on your side, it's often recommended to use a pillow that allows your spine to maintain a horizontal, straight line. The thickness and firmness of the pillow you need will greatly depend on the shape of your body. For instance, those with a longer neck may need something thicker and firmer than someone with a short neck. You might also want to sleep with a soft, thin pillow in between your legs or under your hip. We call playfully call these BTLP's. "Between the leg pillows” and it's actually how most of us sleep. You may want to try our Organic pillow for this; it's one of our favorite BTLP's! When sleeping on the stomach, if using a pillow at all, it should be relatively flat. Choose a pillow that doesn't push your head up in an unnatural way to either side. You want to be sure the spine stays aligned; if your neck twists up it can create a restless night and back pain throughout the day. If you sleep on your stomach and still experience pain, try sleeping with a flat, thin pillow underneath your hip/stomach area. Although this guide can serve as a starting point, the best pillow is the one you feel comfortable and relaxed on. The main thing to focus on is support. Without proper support, muscle strain and narrowed air ways could occur, resulting in pain, snoring, restlessness, and fatigue. Ultimately, you should choose a pillow you feel comfortable and relaxed on while keeping these tips in mind.
