Features and Benefits of Low Profile Bed Rails If your mattress is too tall, you can use low profile bed rails to lower your bed up to 3 inches. We often hear customers complain that their mattresses are so tall that they cover their headboards and even their footboards. If you have both a headboard and a footboard and you want to lower your bed, our low profile bed rails may be just what you need. We stock two types of low profile size bed rails: hook-on and bolt-on. Following is a description of each type: - Hook-on
Picture of a typical hook-style bed rail bracket. Please note the measurements are not exact and may vary slightly by manufacturer, but work for most beds in which the rails attach by hooking in to the head and footboard. bed rail sets have two hook-on prongs on each of the four corners of rails. - Bolt-on
The above picture is an example of a typical bolt-on bed rail bracket. Not all bolt-on bed rails will look exactly like this, but all bolt-on bed rails will have some arrangement of holes in which to secure bolts. bed rail sets bolt on to your existing headboard and footboard using bolt-on brackets that are on the ends of each bed rail. - Shown below is the hook-on drop rail head/footboard brackets. They easily hook in to your headboard and footboard, and your box spring rests on the rail about 3 inches below!
 - Click for a printable hook template that you can cut out to see if the hooks will work on your bed.
- The bolt-on system (not pictured) works the same way, except the head and footboard brackets have elongated bolt-on plates, rather than hooks for attachment. Our low profile bed rail systems require both a headboard and a footboard.
